The show

Edward Snowden meets Casablanca

Nerds at Silicon Hills like to party. You arrive in the middle of a celebration at their massive corporate headquarters, order a free drink from the singing, computer-generated assistant built into your table, and the story begins around you.

LOOKING AT YOU is an immersive techno-noir music-theatre experience by Kamala Sankaram and Rob Handel, directed by Kristin Marting. It is a story of love and espionage driven by a score for three saxophones, piano and electronics, where operatic arias meet EDM and crime jazz.

When Dorothy lands her dream job as chief software engineer at a social media behemoth, she doesn't expect her past to come crashing in: her ex-boyfriend Ethan has become the world's most famous whistleblower. Pursued by the U.S. government, Ethan's only hope is to delete his fragile physical existence and upload his consciousness permanently to the cloud. For that, he needs the help of the woman he abandoned. Will Dorothy save Ethan, or hold on to her shiny life by turning him in?

Set inside a corporate headquarters complete with coffee shop, saloon, health club and roof garden, the audience sits at tables fitted with touchscreens at the center of the action. The show confronts surveillance capitalism and the erosion of privacy in a digitized world, along with women in the tech industry, the surveillance of communities of color and the chilling effect of surveillance on free speech.

Press

From the world premiere

“The use of technology in the design is truly the best I've ever seen in the theatre.”

The Theatre Times

“Subjects for immersive theater don't get much more relevant than the insidious spread of surveillance, which is cleverly explored in the opera Looking at You.”

Heidi Waleson, The Wall Street Journal

“An entrancing and innovative operatic piece that feels at once an audio-visual surprise party, secret, and sincere rally cry.”

Reviews Hub

“Kamala tackles the implications of digital privacy through an energetic, playful score… Rob Handel's delightfully nerdy libretto makes this a killer trifecta.”

Jamie Leidwinger, WQXR

“The technological achievements were ingenious… the creative pedigree was impressive.”

Seen and Heard International

“This incredible opera is a work of genius.”
